Dive, dive, dive. But I'm a fan of dive bars, and this is my favorite.

Prices are cheap. The bartenders are just the right amount of mean/nice. I have boobs, so they lean to the nice side.

They just redid the back siding where all the smokers hang out. And by "redid," I mean that they put up new plywood. Not all of it is so fancy though. I usually have to get my own toilet paper from under the sink in the ladies room.

If you like people and don't have a mininum number of teeth requirement, Carl's is the place for you!

i love carls place. always cheap, always smoky, what else do you want. great neighborhood dive. and you can take your dogs inside.

Carl's Place is the shiznit!

My partner and I went on a dive bar tour last weekend, and Carl's was by far the diveiest of them all. Although some of the clientele was a bit, er, rough, we were pleasantly surprised by the prompt service. The natives (regulars) are friendly and will talk your ear off given the chance. Import and speciality bottles were low priced ($2.50), but the trade off is smoke and lack of ambiance.
