Great spicy food! The service is very friendly and all the food is fresh.
I think the Pad Thai here is up there with the best in town. Be careful with the heat, however, as it can bite you. I think of myself as able to handle heat, but I think I ordered 4 star and it kicked my butt.
Ban Thai is an great mix of contemporary decor and tasty, classic Thai dishes. The food is always spectacular, I recommend any of the curry dishes (Chicken Panang is my favorite), do yourself a favor, save room for some of Ban Thai's Thai Custard desert, which is EXCELLENT!
I would first like to say that since Ban Thai has opened in Oct of 2006 curry dishes have always been a part of the menu. As long as I have been frequenting this establishment I have not once seen them serve "traditionally chinese" food. As a matter of fact the dishes at Ban Thai have more flavor than most of the Thai restaurants in Des Moines.
I have a feeling that you never inquired about any curry dishes because they have about 8 of them on the menu. I know this because I have eaten every one of them.
Granted, the exterior of the restaurant looks a little drab, the inside is of tasteful decor and is a nice place to go for a quick lunch and quaint enough to take someone special to dinner. I go to Ban Thai all the time, the food is amazing as well as speedy service. I give them 5 stars!!
Another good option to the thai food circuit here in Des Moines, my second favorite thai place, Excellent pad thai and garlic tofu. The food could be a little more consistent, sometimes the same dish tastes different each time I go. But it has always been good.
great fresh entrees, great presentation, service lacks, but overall a great authentic restaurant. House of Thai in Urbandale is still our favorite
Having lived in Thailand for a year, I was very excited to find the opening of a new Thai restaurant in Des Moines! I may have to return every day. The food was excellent and the decor is fresh and simple. Although I went at lunch, I ordered a curry dish off the dinner menu and it came back loaded with fresh basil and wonderful flavors. I can't stop thinking about it and will definitely return.
Ban Thai has opened and I was excited to have Thai food back downtown. The decor is clean and fresh, with contemporary furnishings. The menu was disappointing, no traditional Thai curry dishes. Mostly chinese/ sort of thai dishes.
The spring rolls were served sushi style and were pretty, but had no real flavor and were garnished with a salad dressing type sauce on top. Thinking I would play it safe, I ordered the cashew chicken hot. It was bland and without the heat adding flavor, I would not have eaten it. My companion's meal was ok, but I would probably not return.
The food was awesome, great service. The building might look the same but the interior has been redo and is very nice.
